The EU AI Act Informer

One key takeaway from the EU AI Act, every weekday.

Online retail

Article 4 AI literacy is already live — support staff skills, don’t certify every person

Article 4 of the EU AI Act already requires online retailers that provide or deploy AI to take measures that support AI literacy for staff and others who operate or use those systems on their behalf.

The Digital Omnibus changed the wording. You must support development of AI literacy. You do not have to guarantee that any individual reaches a set skill level.

Measures should fit people’s technical knowledge, experience, education and training. They should also fit the context of use and the customers the systems affect.

For a webshop, that usually means chatbots, recommenders, and gen-AI tools for product text or images. Map who touches those tools. Give role-based briefings and clear instructions for use. Keep a short record of what you offered.

The Commission is to publish practical examples on the single information platform. The AI Board is to adopt recommendations with common objectives.

This duty has applied since 2 February 2025. The current Omnibus wording has applied since 27 July 2026.
